CLIMBING STORIES. THE HISTORY OF LODZ CLIMBING COMMUNITY IN PHOTOGRAPHY AND MATERIAL ARTIFACTS
Our exhibition presents some portion of the history of the community of climbers in Lodz through the prism of changes that have been occurring in climbing technology over the years. This project relies on the collaborative work of a small group of people who—being members of climbing clubs in Lodz—decided to participate in it pro bono publico.
We tell a story about old days of mountaineering in Poland, basing on the particular case of Lodz climbing community. Together with elder members of this community we describe conditions of climbing and mountaineering by making use of old photos, slides, physical artifacts, climbing gear, and associated memories.
During the project we gathered over 600 photos and interviewed 11 members of Lodz climbing community. Hence, the integral part of the exhibition will be a documentary film presenting these remarkable encounters. Participation in this project made us aware of the fact that when people who remember the stories will pass away, the memory of situations and actions will also disappear. This inspired us to create the Mountaineering Archive of Lodz https://www.archiwumgorskie.com.
